Sara Atrouni
Sara Atrouni (b. 1992, Beirut) is a Lisbon-based artist whose practice challenges the conventional boundaries of painting by transforming paint into a sculptural medium. She removes paint from its traditional support, allowing it to exist independently as freestanding, suspended, or affixed forms and inviting tactile and spatial engagement.
Her work is rooted in a deep exploration of materiality, focusing on the physical properties of paint and its potential to shift between surface and structure. Through processes of layering, peeling, and reshaping, she creates pieces that evoke texture, weight, and movement, drawing attention to the sensual and ephemeral qualities of the medium.
A central aspect of her current work is the interplay between transparency and opacity, exploring how paint can filter, reflect, or obscure light. This duality adds a temporal and spatial dimension to her sculptures, changing how they are perceived depending on their environment and lighting.
Atrouni’s practice is driven by experimentation and a desire to push the material beyond its expected function, blurring the line between painting and sculpture. Her work invites viewers to reconsider the role of paint not just as a vehicle for image, but as an object in itself — one that can occupy space, cast shadows, and provoke touch.
She has exhibited in various independent and gallery spaces in Lisbon, where she continues to develop new approaches to material, form, and perception.
