Ana Malta

Ana Malta was born in Lisbon in 1996, where she lives and works. She studied Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon and holds a master’s degree in Creative Industries Management from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto.

Her practice explores colour, pattern, composition and mark-making materials as expressions of her visual imagination and subconscious. Experimentation is central to this process, with "error" embraced as an opportunity for transformation and the discovery of new visual possibilities.

She is a member of the VÊS.TRÊS artist collective. In 2021, she was one of ten finalists for the A Arte Chegou ao Colombo Prize, and in 2023 she won the José Mendonça Visual Arts Prize, awarded by Betar. Cultura Inquieta recognised her as a "Breakthrough Artist" at Art Madrid in 2024. The following year, she received the MEXTO Property Investment Acquisition Prize at ARCOlisboa and the Public Vote Prize at the Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize.

Her career includes artist residencies in Guarda in 2023, at Kunstraum in Brooklyn, New York, and through the Iminente programme in Aljustrel, both in 2024. In 2025, she participated in the Roça Mundo residency in São João dos Angolares, São Tomé and Príncipe.

She has held solo exhibitions at Galeria São Mamede, Crack Kids and Passevite in Lisbon, María Porto Gallery in Madrid, and Yiri Arts in Taiwan. Her group exhibitions include presentations with Underdogs and at the Museu Coleção Berardo in Lisbon, as well as the Espinho and Gaia biennials. She has also participated in ARCOlisboa, Drawing Room Lisboa, Estampa, Art Madrid, Art Paris, Atlanta Art Fair and Hamptons Art Fair.

Alongside her exhibition practice, she has collaborated on artistic interventions with Associação POR:TA and Cool n Vintage, for which she created "Transforming a Land Rover into Rolling Art" in 2023. With Underdogs, she contributed to the São Miguel stage at Lisbon’s Kalorama Festival in 2024 and to "Portais do Tempo" at Lisnave in Almada, a project marking the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution.
