Born in Cabeceiras de Basto in 1947, he trained in Sculpture at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto and at the Escola de Artes Soares dos Reis, and held a Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian scholarship between 1966 and 1968.
With an artistic career begun in the 1960s, he pursues a multidisciplinary practice spanning sculpture, painting and drawing. Alongside his artistic activity, he has worked as a teacher and taken an active part in cultural life, being co-founder of the Galeria do Barredo in Porto and of Domus Arte in Matosinhos.
Over more than five decades of work he has held more than thirty solo exhibitions and taken part in countless group exhibitions, with a regular presence in institutions, galleries and national prizes, as well as appearances in biennials, public projects and institutional exhibitions. His work has been distinguished with several prizes over the course of his career, among them the Prémio de Escultura da Universidade do Porto (1969), the “Um Rio Duas Cidades” prize (1990) and the Prémio Especial Talens (2000).
His work brings together different visual languages and reveals a career marked by continuity, experimentation and the crossing of artistic tradition with formal investigation, establishing him as a consistent presence in the contemporary Portuguese art scene.
