Artur do Cruzeiro Seixas (1920-2020) was one of the major figures of Portuguese and European surrealism. Born in Amadora, he studied at the Escola António Arroio, where he formed friendships with artists such as Mário Cesariny, Júlio Pomar and Marcelino Vespeira. After a brief approach to neorealism, he joined the Portuguese surrealist movement at the end of the 1940s, becoming one of its leading protagonists.
His work developed through drawing, painting, poetry, sculpture and the art object, distinguished by a dreamlike, symbolic and deeply poetic imagery. Between 1952 and 1964 he lived in Angola, where he held exhibitions, carried out museological work and began an important literary and artistic output shaped by his African experience.
On his return to Portugal, he consolidated his national and international recognition through numerous exhibitions and an intense connection to the European art world. His relationship with Galeria São Mamede was particularly significant: besides holding important solo exhibitions there, he served in roles of direction and artistic programming between the late 1960s and the mid-1970s, contributing decisively to establishing the gallery as one of the reference spaces of Portuguese contemporary art.
Across more than seven decades of activity, Cruzeiro Seixas built a singular and unmistakable body of work, marked by the world of dream, desire and metamorphosis. Considered one of the greatest exponents of Portuguese surrealism, he remains an essential figure of twentieth-century Portuguese art and culture.
