João Moniz was born in 1949. A painter, he held a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, which followed and presented his work in Lisbon and Paris.

His painting, built on minimalist compositions, seeks the "essence" of painting and the "mystery of the white canvas", in a reflection on the relationship between matter and spirit. José-Augusto França highlighted its qualities of informal, monochromatic play.

In 1978 he presented the solo exhibition "Peintures de João Moniz" at the Centre Culturel Portugais in Paris, as part of the Foundation’s programme to promote its grant holders, and the Foundation acquired four of his canvases on that occasion, among them "L’Air du Vide". In 1985 he exhibited at the same centre again, in the "L’Artiste du Mois" series directed by José-Augusto França, and held a solo exhibition at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation headquarters in Lisbon. In 1997 the Centre Culturel Calouste Gulbenkian in Paris showed "Matières et Spiritualité. Petits Formats de João Moniz".

His work is held in the collection of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s Modern Art Centre.
