Madalena Pequito was born in Lisbon in 1996. A visual artist, she works at the FANICO studio and has developed her practice in dialogue with other artists and cultural agents, notably through the collective Vês.Três.
In her work, the analogy between the roots of trees and human relationships leads to a reflection on family ties, cultural differences and collective memory. The preservation of those bonds and the search for an identity run through a body of work that starts out from painting and extends into space by means of pictorial installations. The artistic path itself is also an object of reflection, with the sacrifices, insecurities and fears that accompany it.
In 2023 she received support from the Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento (FLAD) to undertake two artist's residencies in New York, at Kunstraum LLC and at Mothership. Following on from this work, she was invited to present the solo exhibition "Shared Roots / Private Jokes", which opened in March 2024 at the Freight+Volume Gallery in Tribeca, Manhattan. The show had financial support from FLAD and institutional support from the Instituto Camões and the Consulate General of Portugal in New York.
Her solo exhibitions also include "How to Build a Villain?", at Galeria Passe Vite in Lisbon, in 2023, and "Migas Para Um", at Erva Art Corner in the same city, in 2025. She has taken part in group exhibitions in Lisbon, New York, Macau and Budapest, as well as in the international biennials ArtFem Macau, in 2018, and Contextile, in Guimarães, in 2022.
She was a finalist for the Prémio Paula Rego, the Prémio Internacional de Artes da Guarda and Jovens Criadores, and received an Honourable Mention at the Jovarte Biennial in 2019.
