Manuel Amado

Manuel Amado (Lisbon, 1938-2019) studied architecture between 1957 and 1966 while working in architecture studios. His first solo show came in 1978, at the invitation of Cruzeiro Seixas; he exhibited regularly from 1983 and in 1987 decided to devote himself entirely to painting. He painted mostly thematic series, returning to them years later: the houses he lived in, cinema, the beach and the sea, spaces of passage, the theatre. De Chirico and Magritte marked his early years, and later the work of Edward Hopper. The poets Pedro Tamen and Nuno Júdice wrote poems in dialogue with his paintings.
