Manuel D'Assumpção

Manuel D'Assumpção (Lisbon, 1926-1969) grew up in Portalegre, where his father, a photographer, taught him the rudiments of painting and photography. In 1947 he left for Paris, where he studied under Fernand Léger and Jean Cassou. He began painting within the surrealist circle, close to António Maria Lisboa, and later moved towards an abstraction with affinities to the School of Paris. He exhibited at the Lisbon Autumn Salon (1958), the Salão dos Novíssimos (1959 and 1960), the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in Paris (1961) and the 6th São Paulo Biennial (1962). The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation devoted a retrospective to his work in 1985.
