Nogueira Lopes

Agostinho Nogueira Lopes was born in Pombal in 1959. He graduated in Sculpture from the Faculdade de Belas-Artes de Lisboa in 1985.

He has taken part regularly in solo and group exhibitions since 1977. Among the first distinctions of his career are an Honourable Mention in the exhibition Amigos de Lisboa, held at the Palácio Foz (1981), and an Honourable Mention at the Salão da Primavera, at the Casino do Estoril (1982).

Sculpture is the central axis of his artistic practice. Working with wood, he explores matter as a territory of memory and the construction of identity, developing a language marked by fragmentation, the overlaying of planes and the relationship between solids and voids. His heads and figures reinterpret the human figure through forms built up from cuts, assemblages and volumes that bring out the complexity and multiplicity of human experience.

Over the course of his career he has taken part in various exhibitions, biennials and artistic projects, notably the Bienal Internacional de Arte de Cerveira (1986, 2015 and 2020), the Bienal de Coruche (2007 and 2009), the Bienal do Lis (2014) and a presence at Art Madrid with Galeria São Mamede (2021).

He has held solo exhibitions at Galeria Bairro Arte, with Transparências Opacas (2009), at the Hospital da Luz (2010), at Galeria de Arte Vale do Lobo and Galeria São Mamede with Figurantes (2017), at Galeria São Mamede, Lisbon, with Penélope e Outros Figurantes (2018), at the Galeria Municipal do Montijo and Galeria São Mamede with Morfologia do Tempo (2022), and at the Oficinas de Formação e Animação Cultural de Aljustrel with O Perfil e a Matéria (2024).

Alongside his exhibition activity, he has worked in illustration and artistic collaboration, notably his collaboration with Atelier Traça Arquitectos (2014-2025), the work carried out for Bagabaga Studios (2016-2022) and the illustrations for the journalism magazine Divergente (2016-2025). In 2016, the report Juventude em Jogo, illustrated by the artist for Divergente, received the 1st Prize AMI, Jornalismo Contra a Indiferença.

In 2018 he took part in the I Simpósio Internacional Floresta, in Leiria, with the sculpture Raízes. In 2024 he was included in the group exhibition of the 6th edition of the Prémio Júlio Resende with the work As Veias Abertas da Democracia. In 2025 he took part in the group exhibition 27 artistas. 27 obras. 27 perspetivas em torno de uma bica, in Seia.
