Paula Rego

Paula Rego (Lisbon, 1935-2022) studied at the Slade School of Art in London between 1952 and 1956, the city where she lived for much of her life. She is best known for paintings and prints based on folk tales and children's stories, figurative compositions in which enigmatic female figures stand at the centre of complex narratives, driven by personal fears and desires and by a will to fight injustice, particularly against women. In 1990-91 she was the first Associate Artist of the National Gallery in London. She is held in the Tate collection.
