Robério Braga

Robério Braga (Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, 1971) is a photographer, director of photography and film director, currently living between artistic and audiovisual practice in Madrid. His photographic work grows out of a continued investigation into identity, memory, cultural resistance and the representation of communities connected to the land and to Afro-Brazilian traditions.

His artistic practice is deeply marked by his experience in cinema, which translates into a strongly cinematographic visual language in which light, composition and narrative construction take a central role. His images articulate the documentary and fiction, often approaching a symbolic and performative dimension without losing the connection to the social and human context from which they emerge.

In the course of his career he has received national and international recognition, notably distinctions in awards such as LensCulture, Paraty em Foco and the Spider Black & White Awards. His work is part of important institutional collections, among them the Museu de Imagem e Som de São Paulo, the Museu Afro Brasil, the Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia, the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Sorocaba, the Fundação Dom Luís I, in Cascais, and the Fundació Carmen & Lluís Bassat, in Barcelona.

Alongside photography, he has developed an extensive career in the audiovisual field, founding a production company in São Paulo in 2002 and taking part as co-producer of the series 3%, Netflix's first Brazilian production. He has also produced feature films, short films, television programmes and music videos, bringing that cinematographic experience into the construction of his visual narratives.

He has published the books Tranças Barrocas and Luz Negra, editorial projects that consolidate his interest in the poetic documentation of communities, cultural gestures and identities in transformation. In 2024 he presented Brasilidades at Galeria São Mamede, in Lisbon.
