Sara Gonçalves

Sara Gonçalves was born in Porto in 1998. She studied in the Painting department of the Escola Artística Soares dos Reis until 2015, afterwards continuing to learn independently. Her artistic training also included dance: she studied for twelve years at the Ginasiano Escola de Dança and took part in workshops with the Pina Bausch company and at Aterballetto / Fondazione Nazionale della Danza.

Between 2018 and 2020 she lived and worked in Barcelona, where she continued to develop her painting. She then returned to Porto, the city where she remains active. Between 2020 and 2021 she collaborated with the platform New Fine Art Exchange.

Her painting is close to abstract expressionism, with artists such as David Ostrowski, Philip Guston and Rose Wylie among her references. In the series "Space only exists when you're not with me", presented in 2020, she brought together thirty black and white works exploring the physical and emotional distance between people. Affective relationships, the expectation of reciprocity and the transformations that accompany individual experience are the starting point of this group of works.

She held her first solo exhibition, "Inevitável", at the Biblioteca Municipal de Santa Maria da Feira, from December 2021 to January 2022. That same year she took part with three works in the Bienal de Arte Contemporânea de Trás-os-Montes, held between June and September.
