Terence Tarsnane

Terence Tarsnane is a painter of Irish descent who lives and works in the Netherlands. He studied painting in London and maintains a close relationship with Portugal and France, where he spends long periods and exhibits regularly.

Still life occupies a central place in his work, marked by the discovery of southern light. Fruit, everyday objects and walls acquire a particular presence through a palette of warm colours and an attention to textures. The same light that illuminates them seems to reveal the wear of the surfaces and the transformations that time imprints on matter.

Working with acrylic paint on paper, Tarsnane explores the expressive qualities of painting in a figurative language. An interest in the world close at hand, in the simple things that usually go unnoticed, runs through his compositions. In them, time seems to be suspended for an instant, although the awareness remains that everything is changing. The familiarity of the objects gives way to the discovery of their presence, their fragility and their capacity to hold our gaze.

His exhibition career includes solo shows at the Jan van Munster gallery, in 1994 and 1996, and at Smelik & Stokking, in 1998 and 2000, both in The Hague. He has also taken part in group exhibitions at the Galerie Groeneveld in Almelo and has shown his work in the United States, in both solo and group presentations.

In addition to painting, he produced the cover and the illustrations for a publication for the Artsen Onderlinge in The Hague.
