Summary
This work by Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, executed in 1957, belongs to a pivotal moment at the height of the artist’s career. Just the year before, in 1956, Vieira da Silva had been granted French citizenship, consolidating her position within the Parisian avant-garde and affirming her international recognition.
Description
Working in gouache on paper, she constructs a dense and intricate urban landscape - one that transcends physical space to become psychological and symbolic. Architecture dissolves into rhythm and structure, forming a labyrinthine composition that is emblematic of her mature visual language. The work is documented in the Catalogue Raisonné (no. 1496) and was exhibited in 1958 at the Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hannover, as part of a travelling exhibition across Germany. It was presented under the title "Ville Mauresque", with its dimensions notably inverted. The work later entered a private collection in Lisbon, where it remained out of public view for decades. Its recent reintroduction to the market marks the reappearance of a historically referenced work from one of the most significant periods of Vieira da Silva’s career - a time in which the city becomes not merely a place, but an inner architecture of memory and perception.
