Fernando Gaspar

Fernando Gaspar (b. 1966, Portugal) is a self-taught visual artist. Since 1986, he has developed a sustained practice shaped by formal experimentation and the continual reinvention of his means of expression. Beginning with drawing and watercolour, he gradually expanded his work across different media, materials and visual languages, building a body of work characterised by transformation and an ongoing search for new artistic possibilities.

Over more than three decades, he has developed a visual language deeply rooted in materiality, memory and the construction of physical and mental territories. His practice has evolved from more intuitive approaches towards increasingly reflective and contemporary lines of enquiry, with space, identity, displacement and landscape frequently serving as defining elements.

He has held more than fifty solo exhibitions in Portugal and abroad, including presentations at institutions and galleries such as Bill Lowe Gallery in Atlanta, Galeria São Mamede, Casino Estoril, Casa-Museu Teixeira Lopes, the Centre Culturel Européen de Nantes and the Portuguese Consulate General in Paris. Among his most significant projects are the series Separated Land, Moving Places, Argonautas and Cidade Paralela, which have strengthened his international presence.

He has also participated in group exhibitions, biennials and art fairs in Portugal and internationally, including Art Madrid, Kunstart and the Gaia Art Biennial. Throughout his career, he has received several painting awards, including the António Joaquim National Painting Prize and the Cultura Aberta Porto Painting Prize.
