Revisiting the concept of memory and moving away from a representational narrative logic, PRETÉRITO consists of a series of paintings that operate in an intermediate territory between reality and fiction, seeking to consider memory as a mental construction/projection rather than as an archive or document.

The exhibition thus proposes a non-linear temporal experience, marked by suspension, by a time that does not move forward but instead extends and reinvents itself each time it is revisited. Each painting functions as a device open to the viewer’s projection, suggesting possible stories without ever defining them.

PRETÉRITO is conceived as a time that continues to unfold as it is viewed. The title of the exhibition thus functions both as method and metaphor, manifesting itself in a temporal experience in which the past is not something distant, but an active tool in the construction of identity. The paintings emerge simultaneously as trace and fiction, questioning the idea of memory as literal narrative and replacing it with a logic of superimposition, suspension, omission and indeterminacy.

By activating mechanisms of recollection, in which the lived, the imagined and the forgotten coexist, the paintings thus become a space of negotiation between presence and absence, visibility and silence.

PRETÉRITO presents a new body of paintings by Ana Cardoso, where female figures, tropical flora, and modernist architecture merge into cinematic scenes suspended between intimacy, escapism, and contemporary nostalgia.
